CPY Challenge: End

I've gone on:
11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4, 12/8,
12/10, 12/11, 12/15, 12/16, 12/17,
12/18, 12/20, 12/22, 12/26, 12/27.

Well, I made 15/20. Not too bad all things considered.

Getting ready to take off on our road trip tonight.
I can't wait for this much needed vacation.

CPY Challenge: =(

I've gone on:
11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4, 12/8,
12/10, 12/11, 12/15, 12/16, 12/17,
12/18, 12/20.

12 out of 20 done.

Unfortunately since I decided not to go on Saturday, I probably won't make the goal.
I have my reasons for not going, but I still feel upset about it. I probably could make it if I can make a Tuesday morning class on the 29th... but since Ryan and I will be leaving to get out of town, it may or may not happen. We'll see how close I can get though!

Daily Om: Rediscovering Dance

Healing with Movement

As children, most of us were encouraged to dance on a regular basis, freely and openly, in whatever way felt best. A few of us may have retained or regained our ability to engage in dancing unselfconsciously, but by the time we reach adulthood, many of us have stopped dancing altogether. We may have hang-ups about our bodies, or we may fear being judged. Then again, we may simply have fallen out of the habit for so long that we don’t even realize we never dance anymore. Whatever the case, there’s no time like now to rediscover the healing pleasure of moving your body to music—alone, as part of a couple, or in a group. Opportunities to dance abound, once you start looking for them.

If you haven’t danced in a long time and feel too self-conscious to start in a public situation, find some time alone to reintroduce yourself to the joy of listening and responding to music with your body. Turn the lights down low and remember that it’s much more fun when you’re not thinking about what you look like. It won’t take long before your body remembers how much it loves to move. Feel the music in your soul, feel the vibrations healing your body. Treat the time like a meditation session in which you agree to allow yourself to fully inhabit your amazing body.

If you feel awkward, remember that every culture since time immemorial has celebrated life and the body with dance. All people carry the memory of dance in their blood and bones. In other words, you were born to do this, it is in you already; all you have to do is start moving. If you prefer more interaction, take a class one night a week. In most cities, you can find everything from modern dance to African dance to ballroom and salsa. Whatever you choose, you won’t regret choosing to rediscover your birthright—the healing, joyful thrill of dancing.

New Years: A break... sort of

I've definitely been on the fringes of being burnt out lately with dance. As Ryan pointed out... maybe you should do something for yourself for a change. So I've picked a song, skeletoned it and have a shit ton of ideas for choreography. Being the possessive cancer that I am, no one's seeing anything till I debut it, and I have no earthly idea when that will be... but I'll let you know when I do. ;-)

At the end of December/ during New Years, Ryan and I are taking a much needed vacation to Iowa to see his grandparents. Let me preface this by saying I love Iowa... it's been the one place I've ever vacationed to and have actually relaxed. Whether other trips are disqualified because they were with my own family (which frankly is always the opposite of relaxing), or they were for dance (in which case I'm running around like a monkey with it's head cut off); point being, they're anything but relaxing.

My grand master plan is to take over Anita's (Ryan's grandmother) huge living room that is hardly ever used (and still has the shag green carpet! I'll take pictures I promise) and dance, scheme, choreograph, perhaps work on costuming if I feel like hauling it all with me.... I think I will, I think Anita might get a huge kick out of it and maybe she'll have some bits and bobbles to add to it. Maybe she'll teach me how to sew... that would be full of win.

I can't wait!

CPY Challenge: 9/20 Done!

I've gone on:
11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4, 12/8,
12/10, 12/11, 12/15, 12/16

9 out of 20 down!

I went to a 6am c2 this morning. Bird taught it, I really liked his take on the flow. It was fun and refreshing to do it that early. I need a new mat for hard flow yoga though, my other mat it moving way too much; even with my yogi toes on it. I'm thinking of trying a Manduka mat. Hopefully I'll have the pennies to buy it in January.

CPY Challenge

I've gone on:
11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4, 12/8,
12/10 & 12/11.

7 out of 20 down!

I'm going to have to do a crazy schedule to make this challenge... the plan for the 13 left is:
12/15 thru 12/20
12/22 thru 12/28

I'm going to have to hit some 6am C2's. This should be interesting!

Another Challenge! LOL!

12/04 Fri - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Melissa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

12/07 Mon - 60 min - Flow Yoga w/ Molly McClellan at Motion En Fuego

12/08 Tues - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Venus at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

So at Core Power they are doing a challenge at just the Ken Caryl and South Denver locations. The concept is to go to 20 yoga classes from the day after thanksgiving to the new year. And if you make it they'll essentially give you a $20 cpy gift certificate free to your account. After doing yoga every single day last month this shouldn't be too hard. So far I've gone on: 11/27, 11/29, 12/1, 12/4 & 12/8. Five down fifteen to go!

Yoga: Dec 1st

12/01 Tues - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Venus at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Yoga Challenge Overview

CorePower Free Classes - 2
CorePower $8 Classes - 5
CorePower Regular Classes - 9
Home Practice - 6
Molly/Dance Classes - 8

Tried 11 different teachers in all!

Not too shabby! After a month of going at it I feel lovely. I can tell I'm getting stronger, if only because my turkish drops are getting better, lol! But I do have more energy and my mental health has definitely improved for the most part.

I think I'm going to continue this but not at full force. My schedule will look like this:
Monday - Molly's Yoga Class
Tues - CPY
Wednesday - 15 min Yoga Warm up in Drills
Thursday - CPY
Friday - CPY
Sat - Optional CPY
Sun - CPY

Saturday was definitely the hardest day to get to yoga for me. It tends to be me and Ryans day to hang out and get errands done, plus none of the classes on Sat at Ken Caryl seem to work well for me... I do like the 8am C2 class, however if I sleep in too late, oh well... not gonna stress about it. Overall it was wonderful though. I'm going to continue blogging everyday I go to yoga... this has been fun and a good use for my journal; in addition to dance related entries of course! ;-)

YC: Day Thirty

11/30 Mon - 60 min - Restorative Yoga w/ Molly McClellan at Motion En Fuego

My mind didn't really want to turn off during restorative, but it was still wonderful nonetheless. Weird... this is the last day of the yoga challenge for me... what will I do now?

Monday, November 30, 2009

YC: Day Twenty Nine

11/29 Sun - 60 min - Candlelight Flow w/ Melissa D. at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Next time I need to position myself closer to the mirrors and further away from the window... I never broke out into a comfortable sweat which is quite uncomforatable. boo. Had a good practice though :)

Saturday, November 28, 2009

11/26 Thurs - 15 min - Home Practice

11/27 Fri - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Melissa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

YC: Day Twenty Three

11/23 Mon - 60 min - C1 w/ Shere at Stapleton CorePowerYoga

I love this teacher, just fanatastic, sweet and cute. I think she said the word yummy 40 times during class! lol! Yay for a wonderful practice! Just about time to head to belly dance class! =) I'm really looking forward to tonight, there's a lovely lady starting shake n' bake, squee!

The First Time I saw the TTDenver Students Dance...

07/15/2006 - Mercury Cafe Open Dance... I distinctly remember wishing I new what on earth I was doing so I could join in that night. I believe I took a workshop with Jennifer S-G. within the next month, because I remember joining in (despite having 2hours worth of education in improv) at Phoenix's next hafla in August or September.
11/21/2009 - And here we are now... I love you guys...

YC: Day Twenty Two

11/22 Sun - 15 min - Home Practice

Had a lovely day with Ryan today, played with the pups, went up to Boulder and meandered about... Ryan bought me the new flyleaf cd and the Owl City cd! Yay for new music! Here's sum puppy pics for you amusement... including proof that Nanook is a pillow! and proof that Niko is... well... is... something or other. lol ;)

YC: Day Twenty One

11/21 Sat - 15 min - Home Practice

Had a lot to do on Sat.
Went and saw Bollywood West perform at the Denver Pavillions, they were fantastic! Pic of me and the fantastic lady Tina below.

Later we went to the Gypsy House Cafe for Basement Bedouins. Another fabulous night, TribalTique Denver showed up in full force (as proven by the picture below)! We all had a fabulous time watching the excellent performances (<3 Janet and Raks Benazir!) and open dancing. All improv all the time! lol!
I'm so thankful for all of the wonderful people who I've met through belly dance, I can't even begin to imagine my life without every single one of you in it! XO!

Friday, November 20, 2009

YC: Day Twenty

11/20 Fri - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Julie B. at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Stefanie came with me today and she loved the class! I think we're going to start doing this every Friday together which makes me very happy.

Thursday, November 19, 2009

YC: Day Nineteen

11/19 Thurs - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Venus at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

I finally held side plank on each side for five full seconds. My shoulders are getting stronger! Woohoo! I also came to the decision today that I do definitely at some point want to do teacher training and something at some point will push me into it, but for now I really just want to immerse myself in my practice. I'm feeling quite wonderful. And I want to continue going to yoga six days a week after this... we'll see how finances pan out though; especially with the busy season for belly dance practically right on top of me.

Time to go get some grub then off to see New Moon with Molly!

YC: Day Eighteen

11/18 Wed - 15-20 min - Drills and Conditioning Yoga Warm Up w/ Molly McClellan at 910 Arts on Sante Fe

Had a pretty energetic night last night; everyone in class was in a good mood and we just had a ton of fun rehearsing for the Holiday Hafla. My knee gave out during open dance which was a little scary but it recovered quickly and wasn't a huge issue.

Lots of things are changing it seems this year... whether people want them to or not.
And the wheel keeps on turning...

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

YC: Day Seventeen

11/17 Tues - 60 min - C1 w/ Neill at Stapleton CorePowerYoga

My back feels different... yes it sounds weird, but it's not in a bad way (I hope; I do pride myself on the body awareness I do have). Just different, put a load of fantastic China Gel on it before I went to sleep last night, fabulous stuff that, I love the smell.

Class today went well... I love the feel of this specific class, the instructor really has a knack for getting everyone in the present moment... you can feel it in the class. *le heart*

Preparing to gear up for the busy belly dance season (yes there is a "belly dance season"). The spring is always full up with things to do. Specifically... Cues and Tattoos and Tribal Fest 10, both of which I'll be taking classes and performing at. Hopefully I'll learn a bit more about sewing and putting together a costume with out screwing anything up this year. *crosses bits*

La Dee Da!

YC: Day Sixteen

11/16 Mon - 60 min - Yoga Flow w/ Molly McClellan at Motion En Fuego

Another good practice yesterday. Only did three hours of yoga/dance instead of four. It definitely helped, I was at least still alive at the end of the night, compared to the last two Mondays.

Monday, November 16, 2009

Immi Immi Immi

I'm on a video watching spree! Been watching Immi's (Imogen Heap's) vBlog on youtube; linked for instant gratification.

Perhaps one of these days I'll get up the two performances I'm in, dancing to her song Hide and Seek. One was with Stefanie at Roast earlier in the year and the other was with Molly at the Boulder Creek festival (they both are fantastic). All of a sudden I'm itching to re-watch those again... hmmm... YES.

Lots of exciting things happenning this week in addition to yoga every single day. Hopefully I will not be a sillyhead and forget my camera (like I usually do).

Time to head off to class! xo!

Sunday, November 15, 2009

YC: Day Fifteen

11/15 Sun - 60 min - Candlelight Flow w/ Melissa D. at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

That class was fantastic. Le Heart! I'm noticing quite the change in my yoga practice... I just feel stronger and more confident in everything I'm doing. It's wonderful. Nicole asked me last night what I plan on doing after November is over... and I don't know. Something to consider.

Had a lovely day, created the new look for my blog here, read a bit and worked on the music plan for Cues and Tattoos in late March. It's going to be a ton of fun!

Time for a new look!

Just gave my blog here a new look! What do you think?

This is the first time in years I've played with image editing of any variety. I'm pleased; especially with the banner. Hope you like it too!
xo ~Joanna

YC: Day Fourteen

11/14 Sat - 60 min - C1 w/ Sherry K. at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Had an okay class today... my body is really just exhausted (*debates what to do*).

Aside from that I went to the Imogen Heap Concert at the Fox Theater tonight in Boulder despite the ridiculous weather and am so glad I did. Intoxicatingly Beautiful. Had a lovely night with Ryan and Nicole which made it even better. Here's a few images of her for your viewing pleasure. She'll be back in April too, which I can't wait for!

Friday, November 13, 2009

YC: Day Thirteen

11/13 Fri - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Melissa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Today was a very emotional class. Laughed. Cried. Loved.

Going to go see face tonight with Ryan, I'm excited!

Thursday, November 12, 2009

YC: Day Twelve

11/12 Thurs - 60 min - C1 w/ Stephanie at Stapleton CorePowerYoga

I didn't have a bad class today... but it was restless. My mind refused to let go. =/
A Hot Power Fusion today would have done me good... but oh well. I'll go for that tomorrow. Some days are better that others, at least I made it to my mat.

YC: Day Eleven

11/11 Wed - 15-20 min - Drills and Conditioning Yoga Warm Up w/ Molly McClellan at 910 Arts on Sante Fe

Despite being exhausted last night... my body felt strong and wanted to go as deep as I could into my down dogs and up dogs. Lovely feelings. Yay for the power of cinnamon rolls! (yeah I had a slip on that whole healthy eating choices thing)

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

YC: Day Ten

11/10 Tues - 60 min - Hot Power Fusion w/ Venus at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Bliss. Contentment.

I officially love hot power fusion.
It brings my crazy mind into focus which is amazing and fantastic.

Time for a shower, dinner, and snuggling with the boy.

YC: Day Nine

11/09 Mon - 60 min - Yoga Flow w/ Molly McClellan at Motion En Fuego

Yesterday was an exhausting day. Went to Lia's class, then yoga and then 2 more hours of dance. Not as exhausting as last Monday when I subbed for Lia's class... but still exhausting nonetheless.

As far as yoga goes though I'm definitely seeing improvement in a few different poses. The most exciting one is crow. I've always sworn I have an abnormally high amount of nerve endings (aka I have a ridiculously low pain tolerance). So when you ask me to stick my knees on the backs of my triceps, they just scream in pain. It's been getting better though which is exciting =)
Last night is the closest I've ever gotten to it. Lunges are getting deeper too...

Sunday, November 8, 2009

YC: Day Eight

11/08 Sun - 60 min - C1 w/ Lisa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Had a decent practice... good focus. I felt bad in the beginning though...
I was so tired I kept yawning, oops. More later!

YC: Day Seven

11/07 Sat - 10 min - Home Practice

My original plan was to go to CPY at 1pm for a C1.
Plans changed though and I decided to stay and help Ryan with yard work over at Gary's. Came home exhausted and stetched, did a few downward dogs and called it a night.

Friday, November 6, 2009

YC: Day Six

11/06 Fri - 60 min - C2 w/ Lauren at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Wasn't my best practice. My body really just wanted rest today.
Going to go rest and relax now...

Thursday, November 5, 2009

YC: Day Five

11/05 Thurs - 60 min - Yoga Sculpt w/ Kacey at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

I broke down and got a month unlimitted at CPY... now I just have to use the heck out of it and I'll feel good and justified. I'm excited I'm going to try a ton of different teachers and classes.

Obviously tried the Yoga Sculpt this morning and I don't think it's what I'm really looking for... I've never really been into aerobics and while it was definitely amusing to be doing yoga aerobics with weights, I don't think it's my thing. I want more flow and less repetition. I go to yoga to slow my brain down not speed it up even more. Not persoally for me... I did really like the teacher though, she made it fun.

YC: Day Four

11/04 Wed - 15-20 min - Drills and Conditioning Yoga Warm Up w/ Molly McClellan at 910 Arts on Sante Fe

Joy... Reflecting on Dance

TO WATCH US DANCE IS TO HEAR OUR HEARTS SPEAK. ~HOPI INDIAN SAYING

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Yoga Challenge: Day Three

11/03 Tues - 60 min - C1 w/ Neill at Stapleton CorePowerYoga

I felt rather horrible and tired this morning.
fancy this... yoga helped.
Hardest part of yoga is getting to your mat, hands down.

Yoga Challenge Day Two

11/02 Mon - 60 min - Yoga Flow w/ Molly McClellan at Motion En Fuego

Yesterday was an exhausting day...
found out one of my co-workers was let go
substituted for my first teacher Lia's class
hour of yoga
2 more additional hours of dance classes
and
the time change

I slept very well last night.

Going to go try a new teacher today for yoga.

Yoga Challenge (Take Two): Day One

I get a little bit of a break and I take a big one.

We just got a big snow storm in Denver this past week starting Wednesday morning and accumulating almost two feet at my house. The roads were awful so Molly and I decided to cancel class. I got out of work early that day came home and slept and slept. Needless to say today is the first day that I've done yoga since Tuesday.

I've had a fabulous wonderful break... I can't believe how much I have slept this weekend, I've taken countless naps and have had no problems sleeping a full nights sleep.

11/01 Sun - 60 min - C1 w/ Lisa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Yoga was LOVELY... I was extremely sore from running amok this weekend. AND! Ron and Andie came! We went out to eat at Imperial Garden afterwards, I got Strawberry Chicken and split steamed dumplings with Ryan. YUM.

Back to work tomorrow... at least I'm well rested. And then there's also the time change! W00t!

First Day at the new studio tomorrow... and I'm also teaching Lia's class before that. Two new experiences in one day, should be fun.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

YC: Day Five

10/27 Tues - 20 min - MP3 Hip Opening flow w/ Lisa Richards from Yoga Download in my dance room!

This is one of my favourite downloads. I even had a chance to light incense today. My room felt cold from dis-use... I'm happy to start using it again. I also felt it was the right time to re-string one of my Mala's that broke a while ago... it felt like an appropriate time.

Time to go to the store and collect the ingredients to make quiche tonight! Yum!

Everything Ends

So many memories in that place...
good bye Dance Fusion.
Off to a new beginning...

Monday, October 26, 2009

YC: Day Four

10/26 Mon - 60 min - Restorative Yoga w/ Molly McClellan at Dance Fusion

Since I won't have time or inclination to blog after class tonight, figure I'll update now.
Today's yoga is a restorative class offered by my fabulous partner in crime Molly McClellan.
I can't wait for it... it'll be between 3 hours of dance classes and will serve as a bit of a break.

One thing I forgot to note about yesterdays practice was that I actually got side plank for a few seconds. My shoulders fight me constantly in this pose. Trying to find a balance between too much and too little. Chaturunga (sp?) is feeling better slowly but surely too in the shoulder area. It's shimmy time tonight in Belly Dance class... we'll see how they hold up. Cross your fingers for me.

Joanna's Yoga Challenge (YC)

I got the idea for a yoga challenge from Nicole who posted her challenge and blog on a yoga community.
This challenge will extend through the end of November for me.
The basic concept is to do at least 20 minutes of yoga each day, make healthier eating choices, read an excerpt out of Meditations from the Mat each day and blog about it.

I was going to start on November 1st but this past weekend I've done yoga every single day so I figured I'd just start now! Here's what I've done so far...

10/23 Fri - 60 min - Hot Fusion Yoga w/ Melissa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga
10/24 Sat - 105 min - Hot Yoga w/ Jim V at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga
10/25 Sun - 60 min - C1 w/ Lisa at Ken Caryl CorePowerYoga

Time to go take a shower! lol!

Past, Present and Future

Last nights classes turned out to be simply wonderful. The ever lovely Gwyn and Vikki showed up which was very exciting! And we had three new lovely ladies, in addition to all of our fantastic regulars. The energy in the room was exhilarating. So many beautiful and different women.
Pure Joy.
I hope everyone else had as wonderful a night as I did.

Dahlia's Last Hafla at Dance Fusion

We had a wonderful time we'll never forget...

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Martha Graham Quote

“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.

If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.

It is not yours to determine how good it is; nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.

You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.

Keep the channel open. No artist is ever pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

–Martha Graham to Agnes De Mille

Ballet: Class One

-Went to go try the studio 21 adult ballet and lyrical class tonight.
-Unfortunately (but maybe not) the normal teacher wasn't there and there was a subsitute who was patient, sweet and supportive (seeing as I had NO CLUE what I was doing, yay for being a mimicker!)
-GOOD: Bellydance/yoga has given me a strong core so I had great posture!
-BAD: Bellydance/yoga have taught me to always have soft knees (I'm not actually even half convinced it was a bad thing tho... balet and bellydance both put a lot of wear and tear on you knees for different reasons... oh knees I am very leery of locking you.)
-Overall it felt wonderful to be a complete novice in dance again, all of the different names are still making my head spin I must say though! eep! I'm going to look for some sort of a terms guide for reference.
-I don't think I'll be able to make it next Tuesday seeing as that'll be Ryan's birthday, but I'm looking forward to the week after! Perhaps then the lyrical class won't be unexpectedly cancelled and I'll be able to take that class as well!

Trying something new!

Tonight I'm going to attend a ballet class and a lyrical class! People have always seemed amazed when I tell them that the only form of dance I have ever studied is belly dance. It's been amusing and a bit of a novelty trait for the past 4 years, but I'm past ready to expand my horizons. I've wanted to take a beginning balet class for the past two years but have never found one at a time that worked with my schedule. Now I have two classes... lol! I never do anything in small doses it seems. The classes are at studio 21 in Golden if ya'll are curious. Wish me luck!

Finding Balance

I've often heard people say, "Life is just a balancing act." But what no one ever talks about is how to find the strength to pick up all the pieces when the reason you dropped everything to begin with is because you're torn, exhausted, trampled and burned out.

How do you put that shattered mirror back together? I'm finding out... that just picking it up, one piece at a time, slow and unhurried is best; because to pick everything up at once only creates another disaster.

I'm sorry for those of you who are predominately in my dance life. I'm just now trying to pick up that piece again and bring my heart back into it.

Book Recomendation

Just started reading "The Belly Dancer" by Deanna Cameron.
I'm on chapter four and so far it's been a wonderful read.

::edit::
07/22/09
Just finished the book.
What charmed me the most was the description of how the girl felt during and after her lessons, the practicing at home and the first time feeling of being on the stage. It's something that every belly dancer can relate to and remember.

Weekend accomplished with no complications! w00t!

The "Summer Spectacular" went smoothly...
-scooped up everyone except Dian and headed up to FOCO
-Met everyone at the stage which was easy to find once I found out it was right next to the Ben and Jerry's.
-Had two fairly seamless sets, tons of pictures were taken... I have yet to see them though
-Ryan took video footage of the first set and relaxed and watched the second, Don't know if they'll make it to youtube or not... we'll see.

Just have to teach two classes tonight, which I'm not too worried about. I'm prepared.
It's gonna be fun, per usual.

Tribal Fest 9 Break Down!

Monday:
-went to work, hauled it and finished payroll as well as ALL of my other tasks in ONE DAY.
-went and taught classes with Molly, had chai nom!
-finished at 9PM then headed back to her house to grab suitcases and eat dinner that Harley made for us!
-Ryan graciously drove us to Fort Collins and dropped us off at Julia's. Packed the car and headed out.
-Drove...

Tuesday:
-Drove...
-Drove...
-Drove...
-Made it to the hotel around 6PMish... made the drive from FOCO in 18.5ish hours. We rock!
-Went to applebee's and got ourselves some food and quite large alcoholic beverages. Twas fantastic.
-Meandered over to Trader Joe's and stocked up on protein bars, yogurt and fruit.
-went back to the hotel and crashed

Wednesday:
We all had three workshops.
-First for me and Molly was Asharah: Progressive Raqs. Overall it was a very informative workshop. I loved the lecture portion. It gave me a lot of new material to work with and affirmed that I have a lot of work to do regarding glute squeezes.
-Second workshop was Suhaila's, whom I had never taken a class from before. She taught a choreography that I did enjoy. I must say she's a very efficient teacher.
-Third was Mardi Love! Who also taught a choreography that was uber happy making. My body however was drained from the heat and previous workhops so I had to sit out about half way through. I think I'm going to make a rule for myself. Max 2 workshops a day. My brain can not hold 6 hours worth of information and my body does not like to deal with that much new material.
-Got some din din at Thai Pot for miss Emilie's birthday, went back to the hotel and crashed.

Thursday:
I took the morning off and meandered about the vendors while the other girls took Unmata's workshop.
-Went to Carolena Nericcio's "Crafting an ATS Set" at 12:45PM. It was the hi-light of the trip for me. Improv is what I love and live for. It was such a huge joy for me to be able to finally take a class from her and no less with Molly who I learned from. We were in group one with Raven and Kajira. I don't think I can really put into words how much those two hours meaned to me.
http://fcbdblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/crafting-ats-set-at-tribal-fest.html
-Went to San Fran later on to see the indigo's show. Which was completely amazing per usual. *HEART*

Friday:
-Had Urban Tribal/Heather Stants - Fluid workshop at 10AM. As always I love the concepts she presents in her workshops. Yay for different ways to move!
-Next was Princess Farhana's abs workshop, gained a lot of good information and new ways to explain belly rolls and flutters.
-Went to the performances that night. On my *heart list* Zafira w/Onca, Red Lotus Belly Dance, Colleena, RB, Urban Tribal, Princess Farhana, Romka, Ahsarah and of course Suhaila. Red Lotus was so beautiful and was quite possibly my favourite performance of the entire weekend.
-Decided not to go to the after party and we were exhausted.

Saturday:
-The only workshop we had was at 5:15PM with Heather Stants - Dance Composition. I honestly debated not to go as FCBD was scheduled to perform during the workshop. I ended up going however and was so glad that I did. The workshop was simply amazing. I would retake this workshop a million times. So inspiring. If you ever have the chance to take it, do!
-Performances of note for the day: Gypsy Fire and Sister Fire, Boom Boom Bollywood, Satya, Clandestine, the beautiful ladies who filled superkate's spot and danced to ekova-I don't know their names :(, Danse du Ventre, Hipnotic, and Unmata.
-Again... skipped the after party... far too tired :(

Sunday:
The day we performed... it was an experience to remember. So surreal.
-I woke up WAY before anyone else in the room and started getting ready for our performance. Taking my time, and consciously trying to slow down everything I was doing, making the getting ready part practically a moving meditation. The other girls slowly woke up and started getting ready/packing up belongings themselves. We finished with 30 minutes to spare, checked out of the hotel and headed to the festival.
-Our performance time was 1:30PM. And I had a blast getting ready in the performers room, there was a nervous energy in the room but it belonged there. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, I believe that to be a good performer you need that nervousness there. The 30 minutes before we went on seemed to fly, yet every moment is vivid in my memory. What I was mostly nervous about was the stage. I had not had a chance to step foot on it during the open dance, the day before since I was in a workshop during that time. I had no idea if it was slippery, made of concrete or what. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find it had good grip, maybe a smidge too slippery for my taste but was made to absorb shock. YAY. Seeing as we had two turkish drops in our routine it was VERY happy making for my knees. They're still rather bruised though I must say. I believe our performance went well overall.
-back in the dressing room after wards was fabulous, lots of hugs. Meandered around in costume for a bit and got a ton of compliments, everyone was mesmerized by the costumes. Was in a ton of pictures. Thank You to everyone who gave a hug or a compliment, you all rock!
-Ripping all 4 eyelashes off was gratifying as usual. Got all of our make-up off. Accidentally sat on RB's suitcase, lol. Sat for a bit.... took in the atmosphere. Open danced a bit with some Unmata style improv ladies which was challenging but the adrenaline rush I was on made it manageable, lol! Molly and I decided to not do the last workshop and go get burgers instead at Hopmunk. OMG twas fabulous!
-Came back to the fest and watched the indigo perform. The beaded dresses... *le sigh* Mardi's solo *le sigh* The brothers were pretty awesome to see again.
-Got in the car made a pit stop at target/starbucks and headed out!
-Drive... Drive... Drive...
-I was a chatter box the entire way fyi... weird.

Monday:
-Drive... Drive... Drive...
-Arrived in FOCO around 2ish... I think? Ryan came and picked Molly and I up. Headed to Denver and home. Got to see all my animals, unpacked and crashed.

Overall it was an amazing trip, I love the girls in my troupe and can't wait to do this again next year!

New Fictional Belly Dance Book

Here is an amazon link. It releases July 7, 2009.

DeAnna Cameron

Re Following

http://dancefirst-thinklater.blogspot.com/2009/02/art-of-following.html

This is in regards to most duet traditional forms of dance... however it still applies to improv quite a bit. I'm and quite amused by the last paragraph myself.

A favourite quote of mine...

...that I'd forgotten about.

"Beginner dancer; knows nothing. Intermediate dancer; knows everything and is too good to dance with beginners. Hotshot dancer; too good to dance with anyone. Advanced dancer; dances with everyone - especially beginners." - Unknown

Tribal Fest Prep

My life is pretty much consumed by Tribal Fest prep.
Hopefully I will end up with internet access so I can make a post every day that I'm there. We'll see.
I'm hoping to make it to bed by 9:30 or 10PM every single night this week. That would be beneficial to my sanity.
My to do list is VERY long... #1 is finish my costume. The rest will get done is due time... I hope.

Yoga Journal Colorado Conference

http://www.yjevents.com/ep09/

Started to look at the yoga journal conference details this morning. I think I'm going to be able to afford one day. Trying to decide what day to do... debates between Thursday intensive or a Friday or Saturday day pass. I wish I could do the full main conference, but that's a wee bit expensive for my budget, plus then I'd have to find somewhere to stay in Estes Park and I doubt that is cheap. Have to have registration in by July 31st... so I have a while, however, it says the day passes are limitted... I have no idea how limitted those may or may not be.

I've never really been to a yoga workshop before so I'm very curious to attend and see how everything is run. In addition to all of the fabulous information I'll get... e! And I'd totally be lying if I didn't say I wasn't looking forward to the vending. Yoga Jewelry... *drool*

Elevation Day 3

Unfortunately (but as was expected) I was dead tired Sunday morning. Got down to Golden about an hour before Kassar's class started and had time to go to the cute coffee shop next door to paprika and get a fabu chai tea.

Kassar's class was delightfully challenging. Definitely took home a lot of concepts to work on... it makes me want a level 2 drills class, with a huge focus on layering. Maybe I can come up with a curriculum for myself and have me and Stef work on it on Fridays... that would be SWEET.

Stayed for the first 20 minutes of Elijah's workshop and while I was very interested in the concepts he was presenting, the smoke from whatever incense he was burning completely turned my stomach and was giving me a headache. Went over to Paprika's and tried to get rid of the feeling and headache. Talked and shopped with Dian a bit. Found a very cute skirt that I ended up getting.

Had lunch at Quizno's and then headed over the the little park that's tucked away on the east side of the welcome street. Took in some sun and went over TF choreography some more. Still wasn't feeling well so I decided to go home and rest up before TF rehearsal. Spent some nice time with Ryan and took off to rehearsal. 3 hours later I crashed in bed. Ryan was nice enough to pull the barrettes, bobby pins and hair ties out of my hair, he knows that if I sleep with all of that in I'll wake up with a headache. *heart*

Elevation Day 2

I spent the morning costuming for TF and hanging with Ryan, as I only had one workshop on Sat. which was Romka's sword workshop. I loved the choreography and once you got it down it was hard not to add the attitude in. LOL! It was unfortunately a very quick 2 hours... I wish it would have been a 3 hour workshop.

Ran down the street with Ryan and stuffed our faces really quick before the show. Cheated on my no pop rule and indulged in a fabulous cherry coke. Ran back to the Buffalo Rose and waited in line with everyone else for the doors to open. Decided I wanted to just have a fun night and decided to forgo the make-up and fancy clothes, totally just wore my workshop clothes. I have to admit I was excited for the show (which was fantastic), but I was even more excited for the open dance. We had SO many awesome improv girls there that night! It made for an amazing open dance. Jen stuck it out with me until they kicked us out.

Elevation Day 1

The Colorado weather decided to dump a spring snowstorm on us this morning. Yuck. Driving was terrible but I planned and made it out to Golden with perfect timing for my first class with Rachel Brice at 8:30AM. Rachel's class was fabulous as always. It gave me some new concepts and ideas to play with and totally wrapped my brain into a pretzel. 3 hours of w00t!

Went and got lunch with Dian at Capital Grill (I think?) Had a lovely talk with her.

Went back to Buffalo Rose for my second workshop. Kassar's fast combinations. The concepts behind the combo's were fairly simple, but the sequencing was amazing. Beautifully simple. I took video footage of everything today for reference. I have given up at notes since I can never decipher my scribble scratch after a workshop.

Went over to Molly's afterwards and hauled ass on TF9 choreography. I feel a bit better now. However, the brain is goo. Thank God for LUNA bars, they got me through the day in one piece. I heart the chai and smores... OMG! NOM!

Must costume... rehearse... costume... rehearse... organize the brain. ja. It's going to be a long couple of weeks. Wouldn't have it any other way though.

New MirRawr!

Tiz fabulous, was cheap and now it's mine! E!

w00t! I'm a happy JoZilla!

Cues and Tattoos

At the beginning of April, Stefanie, Molly and I went to Seattle to perform and attend Cues and Tattoos. A festival dedicated entirely to the improvisational style of tribal belly dance. Troupe Hipnotica put on the festival and it was amazing. Very inspiring and motivating. I can't wait to attend next year!

I hope to add pics to this post later.

Dance Poem

For Some, dance is not just a pastime,
Its an undeniable fact of living,
A blissful slavery of mind, and body and soul.
To rise above the ashes of mediocrity is rare,
Yet the gift of dance is freely handed out to anyone,
Who cares to receive it,
Instantly shattering our daily drudgery.

The path to pursue more than the usual,
More than what is safe and known,
Is wrought with time-sharpened jagged blades that cut deep,
Blocking many from the road to something greater,
Beyond the stunted imagination of their peers.

Within the veins of the few,
Passion fills every sinew with sweet unquenchable purpose,
Calming the fear of those treacherous paths,
Though each slice burns and bleeds,
Still they take each cut,
And wear the scars with pride to signal their choice,
That undying pursuit of greater joy within every step.

Introduction/Bio

Dancing has always had its special place in Joanna's heart. After taking a belly dance class with her first instructor Lia Ridley, in the fall of 2005, she instantly became hooked. Taking the grace and Romany style roots that her first teacher Lia instilled in her, Joanna began studying Tribal Improvisational Style with Molly McClellan of TribalTique in the fall of 2006.
After watching the Shake and Bake students practice their improv skills and seeing the undying group support for whoever took the lead, Joanna was inspired to push her dance to the next level. She was accepted into upper level classes and started performing with TribalTique's Denver Chapter regularly. Joanna started taking an interest in helping students learn, and in the Spring of 2008, she became Molly’s Teacher Assistant. She has found it to be a challenging and rewarding experience.
Knowing that she's only touched the tip of the "belly dance iceberg", Joanna attends every available belly dance event and workshop to further hone her craft and skill.
Joanna was invited to become an Assistant Director of TribalTique in the Fall of 2008.
